Everyone is unique and we have a special code within all our cells, but what do you know about this code and how we use DNA in the lab? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each day scientists work with DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) and it is this special molecule that contains all the genetic instructions for all living organisms. DNA is important because it carries genetic information that determines who we are – from eye colour, to height – and each of us is different and unique! Through investigating and testing DNA we can better understand the world around us, from how we function, to helping us to identify viruses and to understanding diseases. Therefore, it\u2019s really important that we trust and test the medicines and drug products we take everyday to make sure they don\u2019t contain viruses and bacteria \u2013 we need them to be safe for us and our environment! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Rachael Hewitt<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Rachael Hewitt and I work for Merck Bioreliance! We are a Contract Testing Services company, and we specialise in Biosafety testing, which means we test drug products, vaccines, and antibodies that patients and people take every day to ensure they are safe. As a Lab Manager, I’m responsible for a team of Scientists who are working on a range of projects and products. I also lead our Science volunteering programme, called SPARK – taking science experiments out to schools and community groups, hoping to SPARK and inspire the next generation of Scientists. Before joining Merck, I completed a PhD in Cancer Science and Epigenetics at the Beatson Institute of Cancer Sciences. I love learning about the world around us and how we can live happier, healthier lives. To keep me healthy I love taking my Sprocker Spaniel, Pearl for long walks and enjoy all things theatre – my favourite musical is Wicked and you’ll often find me in the lab singing along to songs!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
