Dive in with Scotland Conservation Officer Catherine from the Marine Conservation Society as she shares some amazing sea creatures that live in Scotland’s Seas and what we can all do to help protect them! From learning underwater dive signals, to how to become a citizen scientist and take part in beach cleans, this session hopes to inspire lots of ocean optimism and action no matter where you live.

The Marine Conservation Society’s Ocean-Friendly Schools Award is a free, curriculum-linked initiative that’s all about empowering young people to take action for our seas. Schools choose an action area – Clean up our seas, Stop overfishing, or Fight climate change – and complete a series of tasks and projects to achieve a whole-school award and become an accredited Ocean-Friendly School. The award has been designed to be run by a class, school council, or eco-group, and meets Eco-Schools requirements for the Marine topic. Register your interest at education@mcsuk.org today!

About Catherine Gemmell

As the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Scotland Conservation Officer, my work can cover many different projects from education and public engagement to campaigns and policy. Over the past seven years I have mainly been focusing on the promotion of our beach cleaning and litter surveying project Beachwatch and using the data collected to drive change in marine litter policy. Prior to MCS, I have held several public engagement and environmental education roles after I studied Marine and Coastal Resource Management at Aberdeen University, which is where I also learnt to dive. Whether under, on or beside the sea, it is fantastic to have come full circle to now be working for a marine conservation charity and volunteering as a STEM Ambassador to help inspire some ocean optimism and encourage everyone to take action to protect our incredible seas.
