Get your questions ready for Lewis Irvine, a trainee clinical scientist in genetics at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, as we explore the world of genes! In this live session, we’ll talk about his work, and what inspired him to pursue a career in science.

About Lewis Irvine

My name is Lewis Irvine and I currently work as a Trainee Clinical Scientist within the Genetics department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Our job is to look at a person’s DNA and figure out if that could be why they have a particular disease, or even to try and help doctors/nurses understand how best to treat the condition a person has.

Before starting this job in October 2025, I worked as a lab scientist for Glasgow University for 1 year, the same university I went to for 5 years to study biology & chemistry after finishing school. Science and sports were my two favourite things at school (& the things I was best at!), so I wanted to keep doing both as long as I could!

Whilst I was at school and university, I was very lucky to travel the world playing golf for Scotland, going to places like Ecuador & Chile in South America, South Africa and Morocco in Africa, and all across Europe. I can’t recommend enough keeping stuff outside of school, whether that’s sport or music or anything else, going for as long as you can; it makes you stand out!
